In a historic milestone, N. Jency has become the first transgender woman from Tamil Nadu to earn a PhD and secure an appointment as an assistant professor at Loyola College, Chennai. Her remarkable journey from the village of Tiruttani in Tiruvallur district to the prestigious halls of academia is a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education.

Born and raised in Tiruttani, N. Jency faced significant challenges due to her transgender identity, including initial resistance from family and society. Undeterred, she pursued her passion for learning, earning gold medals in both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Her academic excellence culminated in her becoming the first transgender woman to pursue PhD research in Loyola College’s English Department, a groundbreaking achievement for the LGBTQI community.

N. Jency’s appointment as assistant professor is not just a personal triumph but a beacon of hope for transgender empowerment in Tamil Nadu. Recognized by Chief Minister MK Stalin, who praised her as an inspiration, Jency advocates for permanent teaching positions for transgender individuals in government colleges, pushing for systemic change to advance trans rights.

At Sahodari Foundation, we celebrate N Jency’s success as it embodies our mission to empower transgender and gender non-binary communities through inclusive education, art, and advocacy.
